Using a free app on your iPhone and a free program on any PC you want, you can use your iPhone or iPod Touch as both a wireless trackpad mouse and keyboard. And it works flawlessly. In fact, it’s almost creepy how well it works. It’s from Logitech and it’s called Touch Mouse. Apple’s had the “Air Mouse” app for a while now, but it costs $1.99 and in our opinion, it doesn’t work nearly as well as Logitech’s new solution. The features and options are nothing to laugh at, either. Multi-touch scrolling, control/alt/Windows buttons, and a landscape keyboard make this a pretty useful app. It works for both Mac and PC users, so read on for the quick tutorial on setting it up.
1) First thing’s first: head to the App Store and download Logitech Touch Mouse. It’s free. Then head over to Logitech’s website on your computer and download Logitech Touch Mouse Server, also for free. Install the Touch Mouse Server, and it will automatically load on the taskbar.
2) Now that the desktop software is up and running, open the Touch Mouse app on your iPhone or iTouch. You’ll see the title screen of the app, and if your iPhone/iTouch is on the same wireless network as your computer, you’ll see your computer in the list, and you can click it to connect. If, as in our case, the computer is wired but the iPhone/iTouch is wireless, you can type in the IP address of the computer as shown in the above image. After typing it in, you should connect almost instantly.
3) Now that your iPhone/iTouch is connected, just use the touchscreen as if it was a trackpad, complete with tap-clicking, two-finger scrolling, clicking+dragging, etc. It’s truly amazing how accurate and speedy this all works together. I honestly think my iPhone’s “trackpad” is more accurate than my old laptop’s pad. Don’t miss the settings window, which can be accessed by tapping the gears icon in the lower right of the above image. There’s a lot this app can do. Tapping the keyboard icon in the lower left allows you to type, and the screen can be tilted for a landscape view with bigger keys, just like the normal iPhone/iTouch landscape keyboard.
Enjoy using this for whatever you may choose, whether it be Powerpoint presentations or controlling a movie on your HDTV from the comfort of your couch.
